If have questions about becoming an Intramural Sports Official, email Rob Patchett, Intramural Sports Coordinator, at rpatchett@as.sjsu.edu.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions :

YES! : You CAN be an IM Sports Official without any prior officiating experience!! Prior officiating and/or playing experience is STRONGLY preferred, but not required - we will train you to be an official in the sports you want to work!

YES! : IM Sports Officials can (and are encouraged to) play IM Sports!! All current IM Sports Officials receive 1/2-off their IM Sports team entry fees.

NO! : Intramural Sports officiating is not a reliable source of hours or income. This is the perfect job for students looking for a few hours per week.  Those expecting traditional full or even traditional part-time hours should not apply for these positions. Typical hours for a new official are generally between 3 and 8 hours per week, per sport. If there are an abundance of new officials for a sport, the opportunities for shifts decreases even more.  Veteran officials with more experience typically receive the most hours.

How do I become an IM Sports official?

The application & hiring process:

1. Check out the IM Officials' Manual PDF posted HERE, to see if being and IM Sports Official sounds right for you.

2. Visit the A.S. Jobs web page HERE, view the job description, and complete the online application.

3. You will then be contacted for follow-up and further instructions if your application is considered for hire.  All new hires must meet with the A.S. Human Resources Coordinator and provide all required documents (see below) prior to being scheduled.

4. Once hired, you must attend all meetings for the sports you want to officiate (listed above).  All meetings are "invitation only" - meaning you must receive an email invitation regarding that sport to attend that meeting.

YOU WILL NOT BE HIRED WITHOUT ALL REQUIRED PAPERWORK AND DOCUMENTS
All new hires are required to provide these documents when meeting with the A.S. Human Resources Coordinator:

Driver's License OR SJSU ID card, AND
Social Security Card OR Birth Certificate issued by State or County (copies are unacceptable - we must see the original)

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS MUST bring the above items, AND the following documents as well, before they can be hired as officials:
Unexpired foreign passport (copy)
Form I-94 (copy)
U.S. Visa (copy)
Form I-20 (required if DS stated on form I-94) (copy)
Letter from SJSU International Department (copy)

In order to apply for a social security card number, you must have an official "letter of hire" from the department.  That application process typically takes at least 2-4 weeks, so international students who wish to apply to become IM Sports Officials should contact the Director of Officials at 408-924-6266 to arrange an appointment to get a letter of hire NO LESS THAN 6 WEEKS before the officials' meeting they wish to attend, so they can begin that process of applying for a social security card number at the SSA office in San Jose.
