Renew your VTA SmartPass for Fall 2018 by October 31st
 

To renew your SmartPass, visit the Transportation Solutions/General Services cashiering counter, present your SmartPass Clipper and Tower Card to the staff and pay the $25 renewal fee.

All SmartPass Clippers that have not been renewed will be deactivated. The fee for renewing the SmartPass after the March 31st and October 31st deadlines is $75 ($25 renewal plus $50 fee for issuing a new SmartPass Clipper Card).

If you are not able to renew in person, you can mail a check (payable to AS Transportation Solutions) with a copy of your Tower Card and SmartPass Clipper (serial number showing) to:

SmartPass Clipper Card for current SJSU Employees

     

For just $25/semester (or $50/year), SJSU employees can enjoy unlimited rides on Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) local buses (Non-Express) and Light Rail lines with the SmartPass Clipper for the duration of the Spring semester plus Summer or Fall semester including Winter session. However, the SmartPass Express bus riders can board Express buses by paying a surcharge of $2.25 per ride as E-cash loaded on the SmartPass Clipper card.

To receive a SmartPass Clipper Card:

First, submit a request online in the  SmartPass Clipper Card Request link.

Then, you can immediately pick up your card at the AS Transportation Solutions - General Services. The AS cashiering counter is located in Student Union (9th Street Plaza), Room 1800. SJSU Tower Card is required. The fee is $28 ($25 plus $3 cost of a Clipper card) payable by cash, check, debit or credit card (American Express is not accepted).

Please note:

  • The pre-loaded SmartPass on Clipper is valid only for VTA services. 
  • The SJSU SmartPass Clipper can only be used with Tower Card issued after January 2011 to ride on VTA buses and light rail. SJSU badge or any other form of ID will not be accepted.
  • You will receive only one SmartPass Clipper Card. The card's serial number is linked to your name and Tower Card number. 
  • The SmartPass must be renewed at Transportation Solutions center by March 31st and October 31st every semester for as long as you are employed at SJSU. The renewal fee is $25.
  • If you are in the fee waiver program, that program entitles you to instructional services but not to student services. Employees utilizing the fee waiver program will be charged the staff rate for student services including the SmartPass Clipper Card.

You can also use your SmartPass Clipper card on other Bay Area transit agencies' services such as Caltrain, BART, SF Muni, etc., provided that you load the Clipper card with additional funds. 

The SmartPass Clipper is also valid on Access Paratransit service for SJSU employees with disabilities who are unable to take bus or Light Rail.

SJSU employees can buy regional transit tickets/ passes with pre-tax dollars by participating in the Commuter Benefit program.

As displayed on the VTA Clipper Card readers, all current SmartPass Clipper cards will expire on December 31, 2019 until reprogrammed.

If you are experiencing validation defect or other problems with your SmartPass Clipper card, do not discard the card, bring it to the AS Transportation Solutions' office for a free replacement.

AS Transportation Solutions is not responsible for the cost of any fare incurred due to a deffective SmartPass Clipper card.

     

Cancelling SmartPass Clipper Card Online Request

If you change your mind and want to cancel your online request for the SmartPass Clipper card, stop by Transportation Solutions office with your Tower Card and the TS staff will void your request. If you are not able to visit the TS office, send an email with your Tower Card number to tiffany.rodriguez@sjsu.edu

TS will cancel all the SmartPass Clipper Card requests that have not been fulfilled at the end of each semester.

How long the SmartPass on the Clipper Card is good for?

For the duration of each semester including summer and winter (or about 6 months). To continue usage, you must renew the SmartPass purchased in Spring semester before or on October 31st, and renew the SmartPass purchased in Fall semester before or on March 31st of the following year. Otherwise, the SmartPass will be deactivated.
     
When will the SmartPass Clipper Card for the next semester be available for purchase?

Anytime, however if you pick up a SmartPass Clipper in Spring or Summer, you'll need to renew it by October 31st. If you pick up a SmartPass Clipper in Fall, you'll need to renew it by March 31st of the following year.
     
Can I buy the SmartPass Clipper Card at a pro-rated price?

No. However, $25 is still a great deal whenever you buy it. The price is equivalent to 4 Day passes worth of VTA (Bus & Light Rail) Adult Fares.
     

I am also a student at SJSU, can I get a SmartPass Clipper Card as a student?

If you paid the Student Assoication fee, then you can receive a SmartPass Clipper card as a student.

If you are in the fee waiver program, that program entitles you to instructional services but not to student services. Employees utilizing the fee waiver program will be charged the staff rate for student services including the SmartPass Clipper Card. Please visit the Transportation Solutions Center; the front counter staff will determine your specific eligibility.

     
Can I use Commuter Check to pay for the SmartPass Clipper?

No.
     
Can I use the University key card (badge) for ID to show to VTA operators instead of Tower Card?

No. You must show Tower Card to purchase and use the SmartPass Clipper.
 

If I lose my SmartPass Clipper Card, can I wait until next renewal date to receive a replacement for $25?

No. Based on the replacement policy, you'll be charged $50 replacement fee plus the $25 renewal fee.

     

SJSU employees - How to get your SmartPass Clipper Card

     
Method 1: Pick up in person   Purchase your SmartPass Clipper card for $25 (plus $3 cost of Clipper card) at the Transportation Solutions Center. First, submit a request in the SmartPass Clipper Card Request link. Then go to TS Center located in Student Union, East Wing (on 9th Street Plaza), Room 1800 to pick up your SmartPass Clipper card. The Center is open Monday through Friday 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM during Fall and Spring semesters, and 9:00 - 12:00 AM, 1:00 - 4:00 PM during summer and winter sessions. Your must present your Tower Card to pick up the SmartPass Clipper card. SJSU employee badge or key cards are not accepted!
     
Method 2: Intracampus Mail  

To do so, please submit a request in the SmartPass Clipper Card Request link, then mail in
1) your SJSU business card or a sheet with your name, phone number, and return extended zip code,
2) a photocopy of the front side of your Tower Card ID (must be issued/reissued after Janauary 2011), and
3) a $28 check or money order (payable to Associated Students Transportation Solutions) to the following address:

You can expect a reply within a week.

TS will not accept mail requests who do not meet any of the above criteria. Also, TS will not accept mail requests for replacements if you lost your SmartPass Clipper card while in possession or if your card was stolen.

     

SmartPass Clipper Card Replacement Policy

         

Lost or stolen Tower Card ID and/or SmartPass Clipper Card:

If you lose your SmartPass Clipper card or it gets stolen, contact Transportation Solutions immediately by phone (408.924.7433), email (transportation@sjsu.edu) or stop by the TS Center and report the loss. Make sure you provide your name and SJSU Tower Card number.

To replace your Tower Card, go to the Student Services Center on 9th & San Fernando streets, Tower Card window and apply for a new Tower Card.

To replace your SmartPass Clipper card, visit Transportation Solutions Center located in the East Wing of Student Union building on 9th Street Plaza by the ATM's.

Damaged SmartPass Clipper Card due to negligence

Please note: Do not punch holes, bend, cut or mishandle that can cause damage to the Clipper card. It will render the card void.

The AS TS will not replace a SmartPass Clipper for free due to damage caused by negligence or mishandling.

 
Please note VTA has made the following changes to the Eco Pass program starting January 2018:
 
  • The name Eco Pass changed to SmartPass. You don't need to replace your current card.
  • VTA has established the Collegiate SmartPass program for all colleges and universities.
  • VTA has excluded the Express Bus Service from the SJSU SmartPass program with the exception of Fremont Express buses (120, 140, 180, 181), and Gilroy Express bus 168 for Eco Pass users in 2017 - until the planned extension of BART to San Jose starts operation in 2019.

The SJSU SmartPass holders are allowed to board other VTA Express buses by paying a surcharge of $2.25 per ride. The surcharge must be paid with E-cash value loaded on the SmartPass Clipper Card.

Please note: In October 2016, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission who oversees the Clipper program in Bay Area stopped waiving the $3 Clipper fee for VTA passes. The Assocaited Students General Services will charge $3 (in cash) for the cost of every SmartPass Clipper card dispensed.
