Highway 17 Express Bus provides service between downtown Santa Cruz (Metro Center), Soquel, Scotts Valley, and San Jose State University (San Fernando Street by 7th Street).

Service is offered 7 days a week. On weekends, service is available from San Jose Diridon Station only. Limited service to/from the Soquel Park and Ride is available on weekdays during peak hours. Travel time is about 1 hour and 10 minutes between SJSU and Metro Center.

The Metro Center provides connection to other Santa Cruz Metro buses serving throughout the Santa Cruz county.

Notice of Fare Increase    
Santa Cruz Metro will increase the fare for Hwy 17 Express starting on September 10, 2015.

The 31-Day pass will increase to $145.00 and the $50 Cash Card (5-Day or 10-Ride Pass) will be discontinued. The new 15-Ride Pass for $95.50 will replace the 10-Ride Pass. Transportation Solutions will continue to sell the old passes until it runs out.

Subsidized by SJSU Parking Services, TS will sell the new 31-Day Pass with $11 discount and the new 15-Ride Pass with $5 discount to SJSU students and employees from its center.

The 31-Day Highway 17 Express bus pass is valid for 31 consecutive days of unlimited rides on Santa Cruz Metro and local VTA services starting from the first day of validation by the fare box on board the bus. This pass also has a one year “absolute” expiration date for non-validated passes. After validation the user need only swipe the card for fare. The $50 Cash Card can be used for 10 non-consecutive rides on Highway 17 Express Bus. It is a “stored value” pass until all the value is used up. It has a 1 year “absolute” expiration date for passes not validated. It can be used to pay for single ride fare or to purchase a day pass on all local Santa Cruz Metro lines and the Highway 17 Express service, it is not valid on VTA local service.

The discounted 31-Day pass and $50 Cash Cards are only available to SJSU students and employees.

$50 Cash Card

  • Discounted tickets can only be purchased at the Transportation Solutions (TS) center Cashier counter located in the Student Union, East Wing (on 9th Street Plaza), Room 1800 during office hours.

  • TS center accepts only CASH from the University students & employees and Commuter Benefit vouchers (SJSU employees only). ATMs are available outside the Student Union building for your convenience.

  • Only one (1) discounted 31-Day Pass can be purchased at one time, additional tickets can be purchased after three weeks from previous purchase date.
  • Only one (1) discounted $50 Cash Card can be purchased at a time, any additional Cash Card purchase is subject to a four business day waiting period. No more than three (3) discounted $50 Cash Cards can be purchased in a single month.

  • Discounted tickets are not transferable. Riders purchasing tickets with the intent to resell or evade fare will have the discount privilege removed, along with additional disciplinary action by Office of Student Conduct & Ethical Development, University Police Department and criminal prosecution.


Free parking is provided at Scotts Valley Transit Center and at Highway 1/Soquel Drive.
