Open University and Special Session
Please note VTA has made the following changes to the Eco Pass program starting January 2018:
 
  • The name Eco Pass is changed to SmartPass. You don't need to replace your current card.
  • VTA has established the Collegiate SmartPass program for all colleges and universities.
  • VTA has excluded the Express Bus Service from the SJSU SmartPass program with the exception of Fremont Express buses (120, 140, 180, 181), and Gilroy Express bus 168 for Eco Pass users in 2017 - until the planned extension of BART to San Jose starts operation in June 2018.

The SJSU SmartPass holders are allowed to board other VTA Express buses by paying a surcharge of $2.25 per ride. The surcharge must be paid with E-cash value loaded on the SmartPass Clipper Card.

 

How to get a SmartPass Clipper Card?

 

Open University Students

As an Open University student, you are not eligible to receive the SmartPass Clipper card unless you become a member of the Associated Students (AS) by paying the AS fee. Then, you become eligible to use all the AS services including the SmartPass Clipper program. Check your fee structure at MySJSU to determine your eligibility.

Once you registered for courses and paid your fees:

1. Request a SmartPass Clipper card online: Click the SmartPass Clipper Card Request link and fill out the short form. Read and check the SmartPass usage Terms & Conditions, then submit your request.

2. Bring your Open University ID card along with a photo ID to the AS Transportation Solutions - General Services Cashier counter (located in Student Union, East Wing on 9th Street Plaza, Room 1800) and pay the Associated Students fee. The staff will issue your SmartPass Clipper card. Please note, the AS fee is not refundable,

3. Then, go to the Tower Card Window in the Student Services Center (North Garage, 1st Floor), present the SmartPass Clipper card and AS fee receipt and apply for a Tower Card,

Please note: You must carry your Tower Card when using the SmartPass Clipper card. VTA requires the SJSU Tower Card to be presented with the SmartPass Clipper. VTA Fare Inspectors will issue a citation to any SJSU student or employee without a Tower Card.

 

SmartPass Renewal Policy

 

To renew your SmartPass, visit the Transportation Solutions/General Services cashiering office located in the East Wing of Student Union building on 9th Street Plaza by the ATM's, present your SmartPass Clipper and Tower Card to the staff and pay the Associated Students fee.

All SmartPass Clippers must be renewed by the Last Day To Add Class date in spring or fall semester. The SmartPass Clippers that have not been renewed will be deactivated after the deadline. The fee for renewing the SmartPass after the deadline is the Assocaited Students semester fee plus $50 for issuing a new SmartPass Clipper Card. 

Please note: The SmartPass Clipper renewal fee is not refundable.
 

SmartPass Clipper Replacement Policy

         

Lost or stolen Tower Card and/or SmartPass Clipper Card

If you lose your Tower Card or it gets stolen, go to the Student Services Center on 9th & San Fernando streets, Tower Card window, and apply for a new one.

If you lose your SmartPass Clipper card or it gets stolen, contact Transportation Solutions immediately by phone (408.924.7433), email (transportation@sjsu.edu) or stop by the TS Center and report the loss. Make sure you provide your name and Tower Card number.

To replace your SmartPass Clipper card visit Transportation Solutions/Genral Services Center located in the East Wing of Student Union building on 9th Street Plaza by the ATM's.

Defective SmartPass Clipper Card

If the SmartPass Clipper card that you received is defective, you can obtain a replacement card at no cost. Bring the defective SmartPass Clipper card to the Transportation Solutions Center and the TS staff will determine whether a no-charge replacement can be issued.

Damaged SmartPass Clipper Card due to negligence

Please note: Do not punch holes, bend, cut or mishandle that can cause damage to the Clipper card. It will render the card void.

The AS TS will not replace a SmartPass Clipper for free due to damage caused by negligence or mishandling.
