| Over the
past five years, with rising pressures to focus scarce
resources upon tested subject areas, the percentage
of California public school students involved in music
education courses has declined by 50%—the sharpest
drop of any single academic subject area. The Sounds
of Silence, a study by the Music for All Foundation
from 2004, states that music education has suffered
the most precipitious decline of all the subject taught
in Calfiornia’s public schools. This portion
of the Californai Music Project would have permanent,
long-term sustainability and far-reaching significance
to stem the decline of music education in California.
The California Music Project, a collaborative effort between the Cesar E. Chavez Community Action Center, the SJSU School of Music, and the California Music Project seeks to restore and strengthen K-12 music education by providing music education fellowships to upper-division or graduate music educations students. Promising SJSU music education students work with existing music programs within low socio-economic schools. |
