| I. PRACTICE SCHEDULE | II. ELIGIBILITY | |||||
|
Available workouts : Winter : Practice Tuesday & Thursdays 7:00-10:00 Basketball games (vary with athletic schedule) *Coaches reserve the right to call additional practices as necessary during competition season. During competition season, practices may go everyday at around these times. Practices will consist of game material, preparing routines for local cheer exhibitions, conditioning, and nationals routine. Make sure you schedule your classes, work, etc. around practice times. If you have a class conflict you must get prior approval from the Head Coach. Work is not an excuse. It is a delicate balance between school, cheer, work and family/friends, but we all have to sacrifice. Practices are mandatory and you are expected to attend all practices on time. If you are going to be late or cannot attend practice, you must call the Head Coach at least two (2) hours prior to practice for approval. If you are feeling ill, go to the Health Center or the Training Room, get a note from our trainer or a Doctor, then call the Head Coach immediately. |
In order to cheer, one must maintain a GPA of 2.0. Grade reports will be collected at the end of each marking period. If a member of the team falls below a 2.0 when grade reports are due, he/she will be placed on probation. During the probationary period, he/she must attend all practices and functions which will be used as a study hall. Once his/her GPA has been raised above the required, he/she will be eligible to actively cheer, but must continue to turn in monthly grade reports for the remainder of the season.
| III. GAMES | IV. FUNCTIONS/EVENTS | V. TRAVEL | ||||
|
In addition to practices, the team could cheer at over 50 games a year. SJSU CHEER supports Football and Men's/Women's Basketball. We may also show our support at one event for all other competitive sports. Please note: Cheering at games are in addition to attending classes, practices, community services, performances, fundraisers and work. |
During the summer and academic school year, in addition to all the games, practices and pep rallies, cheerleaders attend a number of public relations and /or charitable events each year. Most functions/events don't require the entire team. At these instances, the Head Coach will send those members who are able to attend the event. Once a member commits him or herself voluntarily to an event, it becomes mandatory. The team will also conduct various fundraisers throughout the year. This includes: selling raffle tickets on Tuesdays before practice for the Quarterback Club the weeks before the home football games, hosting various cheer clinics and other miscellaneous functions that may arise. |
During the course of the academic year, we may be asked to go to certain Football, Men's Basketball, and Women's Basketball away-games. Travel teams will be based on seniority, grades, attendance records at practice, games, events, skill level, and overall attitude in and out of practices. The Head coach will make all final decisions for the traveling team. (5 Standing Back handsprings or tucks in one minute will be required in order to cheer on the field for any away game where the number of participants is limited)
