The Celebration of Student Advocacy
Through
The Tommie Smith & John Carlos Commemoration Project
Whereas,
in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City ,US track members
Tommie Smith and John Carlos received Olympic medals
for their athletic efforts ,and would later create
one of the most memorable moments in the American
Civil Rights Movement
Whereas,
US track members Tommie Smith and John Carlos ,both
students at San José State University, would protest
the treatment of African American people in the United
States and stood to empower the African American community.
Whereas,
both US track members Tommie Smith and John Carlos
were students at San José State University, they
proved through their courageous act that student
advocacy is of utmost importance to bring attention
to social issues that affect their community and
their nation.
The
student body of San José State University feels the
need to celebrate the courageous act of student advocacy
by Tommie Smith and John Carlos, and other student
advocates from our beloved campus. Therefore, be
it resolved, that the Associated Students Board of
Directors of San José State University support the
Tommie Smith/John Carlos Project to commemorate the
courageous acts of our student advocates in the 1968
Olympic games.
Passed
and Adopted by the Associated Students of San José State
University by unanimous vote, on Wednesday, December
11,2002.
