In 2000, the Spartan Baseball team accomplished what every collegiate baseball squad nationwide dreams of doing each year: they made it to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. But it's also every year that San Jose State turns out a competitive and productive baseball team, which the Spartan Squad is readily behind. One might ask, "How can you have a cheering section at a baseball game? I thought groups like Spartan Squad were only meant for sports like baseball and football." This is simply not the case. The Squad makes its presence known and felt at a wealth of baseball games, especially against rival teams Santa Clara, Fresno State, and Stanford.

Whether it's random heckling, hilarious chants, or just going crazy when SJSU scores the winning run, Spartan Squad has helped turn baseball games into an all-out, non-stop, never-give-up, entertaining affair for students and fans.

And there are new traditions starting this upcoming season.

As the Spartans take the field in the spring of 2007, the connection between the Squad members and the players on the team will become all the more evident. Spartan Squad is instituting a "warm-up roll call" for all SJSU's starting players. What exactly does this mean? When the Spartans make it out to their positions on the field, the Spartan Squad will do a unique cheer or chant for each player around the diamond. The Squad chants the player's name in recognition, until the player waves his glove to the Spartan Squad to let them know that they appreciate the support, and that the Squad can move on to the next player.

Here's to another run at a Western Athletic Conference title, and a spot in Omaha in the coming seasons.
