S p a r t a n Football

Football took the next step in having SJSU's athletic program becoming one of the more respected in the nation. Following a 3-8 season in 2006, second-year mastermind coach Dick Tomey and company gave Spartan fans a 9-4 record and a victory in the New Mexico Bowl, 20-12 over the UNM Lobos in 2007.

SJSU garnered wins over Stanford (Sept. 9) and Fresno State (Dec. 2)- taking those rivalries to another level.

Football at San Jose State University is something that has been a tradition since the first team was organized in 1892. It is the most attended sport at SJSU and has produced names such as Bill Walsh, Dick Vermeil, Steve DeBerg, Jeff Garcia and more...

Wide receivers James Jones (3rd round - Green Bay) and John Broussad (7th round - Jacksonville) represented SJSU in the 2007 NFL draft.

Recent additions to the NFL that you might recognize are Tyson Thompson of the Dallas Cowboys, Courtney Anderson of the Oakland Raiders and Josh Parry of the Philadelphia Eagles; all played their college ball right here at San Jose State! Other San Jose Spartans in the NFL include... Jeff Garcia, QB of the Philadelphia Eagles; Joe Nedney, Kicker for the San Francisco 49ers; Rashied Davis, wide reciever for Chicago Bears.

Spartan Squad members know how important home field advantage can be to our beloved team. Whether its tailgating on the lawn outside the stadium or just rushing in to get the best seats available in our student section; on game day-Spartan Squad members can be found early and often.

Tradition for the Spartan Squad includes PACKING in row after row of our student section in order to be WEDGED in between our friends and colleagues and have the BEST vantage point of the field. Along with guidance and direction of the Cheer Team, we sing the Fight Song after every score as well as participate in chants of "DE-FENSE, ""SAN"..."JOSE" and "SAN JO ... YOU KNOW!"

Thanks to design of Spartan Stadium, our student section allows us to be up-close and personal with the opposing team's bench. We take full advantage of this and let the opposing team's players know whose house they are in.

Furthermore, don't expect to be SITTING at any time throughout the game, that's because our team usually gives us enough reason to be constantly jumping up and down, screaming at the top of our lungs and giving high fives to each other. To say our student section gets rambunctious would be an understatement.

Spartan Squad members stay to the end of EVERY game, WIN or LOSE. We are not just there when the team wins. We stand by our team through thick and thin, because we know that everything comes full circle and a loss today is a win tomorrow.

Last but not least, after the team has chalked up another "W", Spartan Squad members proudly wait for the entire team to come over to our student section and sing the Fight Song with us in unison.

GO SPARTANS!!!
