Santa Clara University (and the Ruff Riders)

Why We're Rivals

The Rivalry between Santa Clara University and San José State has more to do with the short proximity between both Universities above all else. In fact, according to Google Maps, the two universities lie only 4.4 miles apart (about 9 minutes).

The Rivalry Series

Purpose

  • The Rivalry Series was created in the fall of 2002 to build rivalry between Santa Clara University and San Jose State University in all sports
  • To bring attention to college sports in the South Bay
  • To provide a sense of pride between alumni in the Bay Area
  • To increase attendance at sporting events between the two schools
  • To build school spirit among each institution's student body

Point System

Santa Clara and San Jose State will compete in the following sports with the point total for each listed below. The winner of head-to-head matchups in each sport will receive three points for each win. Sports that are not equally funded with scholarships are worth two points each. In the sports of baseball and softball, the winner of the most games in head-to-head matchups will receive the points allocated for that sport. In the case of a tie in a season baseball or softball series, the points shall be distributed equally. In the sport of cross country, the winner of the annual Bronco Invitational shall receive the points for that sport. If both schools do not compete in the Bronco Invitational, the season head-to-head series winner will receive the points for cross country. Should the two teams meet in postseason play (e.g. NCAA Tournament), the winner shall receive one (1) additional point for that sport.
